Top 10 reasons to love Halloween

And what are you going to do this Halloween? Image courtesy of mconners, Morguefile.

When I was younger, it was a tradition at my church for the older kids to create a haunted house in our parish hall. The Halloween party for the kids at our church was downstairs in a main room, and those little kids who were brave enough ventured into our upstairs school rooms and hallway to go through the haunted house.

We had some serious fun being actors in the haunted house. We took advantage of the darkness to pop out of rooms and utter blood-curdling screams to get things started. There were strobe lights, fake blood and fog created by bowls holding dry ice.

There were shrieks and squeals. Mostly from the little kids. Sometimes from their parents. (*cheeky grin*)

For your entertainment today, I’m compiling a list of the best reasons to like Halloween. There are some literary reasons in there, too.

Reason #1: CHOCOLATE GALORE!!!!

Reason #2: Is there any better time of year to read Edward Gorey’s The Gashlycrumb Tinies, John Bellairs’ The House with a Clock in Its Walls, or anything written by Stephen King or Edgar Allan Poe? Another good one is Elizabeth George Speare’s The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

Reason #3: It’s the only time of year you can knock on somebody’s door, beg for stuff, and not get arrested. (I heard that one this morning, and it was too good not to share.)

Reason #4: Glowy Zoey videos. The first time I saw this video, her dad made a Halloween costume for her  — she looked like an illuminated stick figure. This year, Zoey graduated to a storm cloud with lighting and rain. Beware El Niño! (Or should that be La Niña to be grammatically correct?) Video credit: VisualBurrito, YouTube.

Reason #5: The movie Hocus Pocus. Bette Midler is a comic GENIUS in this movie. And Sean Murray of NCIS as a young man. Whoa.

Reason #6: The crunch of autumn leaves, the leafy smell of cold autumn air, and the comforting heat of indoor or outdoor fireplaces.

Reason #7: Figuring out what costume to wear. One of my local places holds a Halloween parade and the variety and creativity in the costumes are amazing. I remember seeing a parent carrying a little one who was dressed up in a ladybug costume. Awwww. The toddler was as cute as a bug.

Reason #8: Illuminated jack-o’-lanterns. There are some seriously clever designs out there.

Reason #9: Halloween parties and bouncing giant jack-o’-lanterns that appear out of nowhere in Arizona.

Reason #10: Cool Halloween light shows from KJ92508 on YouTube. Happy Halloween, everybody!

  1. Oh heck yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Just the smell of bonfires and the crunch of leaves does it for me 🙂

  3. Your description of the cute-as-a bug child in costume brought back a scene I saw yesterday on a morning walk. Two very small girls were getting onto a yellow school bus in their costumes, no doubt anticipating their class Halloween parties.

Each had color-coordinated little bug wings on her back and deeply-boppers on her head. They were escorted to the bus stop by their mom, with the family dog on a leash. They slayed me as they lined up to step onto the bus one by one. Adorable!

  4. El nino and La nina are two entirely different weather systems – So you’re good either way. Terrific costume!
I love all the spooky tales and creative Halloween in blogs
Enjoy all the little goblins this Holler-Ring!

  5. Ah yes, the chocolate, the chocolate! And amazingly, we had some left over at the end of the evening’s festivities!

  6. Well, I never liked chocolate, but it’s the one time a year I let myself watch old-timey scary movies. FUN! 🙂

  7. Thank for this but guy Fawkes has more of a sense of the pagan to it
Kids get to demand money for explosives. Far more subversive

SPEAK!!!
